A BNSF Railway train struck a pickup truck that had high-centered on a private crossing around midnight Tuesday; the truck’s driver had exited the vehicle to get help, a spokesman said.

The woman was alone in a Dodge truck, driving onto the train crossing, on private property about a half-mile east of Southeast 164th Avenue when her vehicle became stuck, said BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas.

She exited the truck and ran to a neighbor’s home to call for help, Melonas said.

A train hauling a load of grain was heading east on a mainline track, and its crew spotted the truck ahead of the crossing. They engaged the train’s emergency brakes, but it was unable to stop in time.

There was minimal damage to the locomotive, and an inspection of the tracks found no damage.

The tracks were closed for three hours during the inspection and cleanup, which delayed nine trains, Melonas said.
