JULIA ANDERSON AND COURTNEY SHERWOOD
Swept by the double tsunami of a sour economy and new building costs, The Columbian Publishing Co. on Wednesday announced plans to relocate its business and newsroom operations to its former offices at 701 W. Eighth St. in downtown Vancouver.
Columbian Publisher Scott Campbell said the move is out of the need to generate more revenue from a new six-story building constructed by Campbell and his wife, Jody. The offices, south of Esther Short Park, opened in January.
The options, Campbell said, are to either lease all of the 118,000-square-foot $30 million structure or to sell it. At present, Columbian newsroom, advertising and circulation operations occupy four of the six floors in the building at 415 W. Sixth St.
The newspaper also might seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection if it is unable to negotiate a new loan with Bank of America, which financed the new building. Chapter 11 gives a business time to reorganize and return to financial health.
“We have been greatly affected by the downturn in the economy,” Campbell said.
“Our customer groups, which include real estate and autos, are heavily impacted.”
Debt on the Columbian Building compounded the problem. The building is owned by Downtown Vitality Partners, a business held by the Campbell family, and is operated by The Columbian Publishing Co.
A number of tenants have moved in and are paying market-rate rents, Campbell said. But The Columbian’s falling revenues have made it difficult to cover its own use of the building.
To trim costs, The Columbian has cut 50 jobs this year, leaving 282 employees, including 12 at the Camas Post-Record. It has also reduced the number of pages printed. But the savings were not enough.
Campbell declined to say whether the business or Downtown Vitality Partners has missed payments, or to comment on the progress of negotiations with Bank of America. With credit markets tight, loan negotiations may prove especially challenging.
“We strongly believe that we will be successful through this transition,” Campbell said. “With the newspaper and our Web site, we continue to be market leaders for both advertisers and readers. We reach many more customers than either TV or radio in this market.”
But until the economy improves, The Columbian will continue to struggle, he said.
“It feels terrible to be in this situation,” he said. “This is definitely the most difficult time in my career.”
Campbell represents the third generation of his family to lead the newspaper, which was purchased by his grandfather, Herbert Campbell, in 1921.
Herbert steered the paper through similar challenges during another downturn 80 years ago, his grandson said.
“The Columbian went through Chapter 11 protection as a result of the Great Depression,” he said.
The relocation to 701 Eighth St. will be preceded by upgrades to the older building. The move is expected in the first quarter of 2009.

Those of us who are not left wing loons receive no value from the Columbian. It's editorials are so far to the left that you have to double check to see if its written by Karl Marx. But the real question is, who will cover the Mayor's butt when the Columbian is gone. I can go to the AP website and see 90% of the Columbian articles. So why buy the paper.by Always Right : 10/8/08 4:42pm - Report Abuse

The Columbian is in a no win situation. How can they be both left wing and right wing? It's sad to see how heartless people can be. If The Columbian goes under, 282 people will be jobless. How can you be excited about that unless your own life is so pathetic you feel the need to make others feel worse about theirs. The Columbian does a ton for the community in many ways, so I hope they are around for a long time to come.by John Mills : 10/8/08 7:02pm - Report Abuse
Let's go after all the folks at The Columbian for doing their job(s) - unbelievable. If you don't like what the folks down there have to say, don't read the paper - pretty simple to send a letter to the editor. If some of you think The Columbian is that bad, you have obviously never read The Oregonian on any kind of regular basis. Keep up the great work down there!!!by Annalisa Dahlen : 10/8/08 7:21pm - Report Abuse
Putting the entity, The Columbian aside, I feel badly for all the folks who lost their jobs over this debacle. Whether they wisely chose to leave before the ship started to sink or were offered life vests as a lay off, they have been deeply impacted by late, hail-mary upper management decisions.by eban kent : 10/8/08 8:43pm - Report Abuse
my opinion the Columbian can move out of the city it is the most lame of papers I have read. Printing only what they see fit not what the public wants jumping on the bandwagon when the TV stations take over on a issues and than make that issue front page news. I think the Columbian is a pathetic piece of garbage and as far as the new and improved website it is Garbage tooby g kortes : 10/8/08 9:54pm - Report Abuse
My main purpose is to express how sad I am that this is happening to The Columbian. I had been wondering why there was never an announcement for an Open House, complete with refreshments and tours. I would have come! Now I know why.by (Anonymous) : 10/8/08 11:02pm - Report Abuse
As for all of you- THe columbian newspaper has been in business for decades, and there have been bad parts and good. We all know the Economy is HORRID right now, and its greatly affecting all small to large newspapers around the country. It took a turn in about 2005 when newspapers started hitting the toilet. It was a little revenue lost, now its a lot. How can you blame anyone at The Columbian for building a fancy building, as revenue goes up and down all the time, and in 2005 it was just a low. The bad economy really is unfortunate . Keep working hard down there! Stick this out!by mammoth kraken : 10/9/08 1:05am - Report Abuse
i'm not blaming the columbian although i'll admit i'm not subscriber. i do check their website daily to see the community crimewatch and weather. i also read stories about local events. i would be sad to see a legacy such as the columbian end. my comment previously was directed at those who troll their site to post negative responses about the columbian. if it didn't exist i'm sure you would troll other sites but would they be sites that provide news within your own community?by John Mills : 10/9/08 1:39am - Report Abuse
Don't read the paper if you "hate" it that bad - pretty simple. To the bob koski's of the country. If the columbian takes shots at republicans or conservatives it is well deserved. It is appearant since 1980 that republicanism and or conservativism ( criminal elements)is not working. The right wingers are anything but right!! They like to hide behind the cloak of God and violate the 10 commandments with an unjust war/killings in iraq ( george bush will never take on north korea) and not be held acountable for any of the atrocities carried out. republicans hide behind God when they ALONE have bankrupt the GREATEST economy on earth so that they can make a profit. Companies will not buy new machinery/equipment (transparent excuse) with these rediculously low interest rates. But greedy wall street gangsters still will go to elected officials and ask for a tax-payer bailout to fund their extravagant lifestyles. One would have to have lost their ability to reason correctly if they expect the "real working class" to give their hard earned monies to CROOKS, GANGSTERS and SHYSTERS that parade around as "wall street 401K investors". Yes oversight should be coming and that is the mandatory jailing of any and all people who vote republican (liars).by s douglas : 10/9/08 6:35am - Report Abuse

In an era when something like 85% of all media; radio, TV, newspapers, books, movies, etc., is controlled by five corporations, the loss of a single independent source of news, whatever its orientation, further erodes the 'informed' portion of the electorate some of us still believe critical to our democracy.by Kathy Thayer : 10/9/08 9:16am - Report Abuse
Oh for crying out loud. Getting personal and saying mean spirited things about the Columbian is not going to help this newspaper. And for those who have something bad to say about the paper, you must like the paper or you wouldn't be reading it or be signed up to post your thoughts about the issues the Columbian brings up. The Columbian is a darn good paper. The Columbian is one of the most fair papers I have ever read. For the record Kathy, I give the columbian their due every single day, in cash, when I buy my daily morning paper at the local gas station. Those of us who read online see ads. The ads support the paper financially. If it wasn't a viable business model, they wouldn't provide the stories online. In theory, at least. This is a challenge all newspapers are facing. When faced with such a challenge, delusions of grandeur are a bit out of place. In other words, the new building was a bonehead move. It would have been foolish and misguided even if the economy became stronger.by citizen 2008 : 10/9/08 10:50am - Report Abuse
I read the Columbian online every single day and occasionally buy the paper. This development saddens me. The gloating by several in this thread reeks of superficial minds finding amusement at the downfall of people with whom they happen to disagree. This is odious at best. I am very sorry for the employees of the Columbian. I am hoping that it doesn't go belly-up altogether. So many people in the Vancouver area love to whine that the "local" TV media don't cover Clark County news. Well, the Columbian has been a reliable source for news of our county. Agree or disagree with the editorials and opinions expressed by the editors, the local news has come through daily. I truly hope this paper continues on. (and where would all the complainers go, if the website went down? lol, it might actually increase the physical assault rate, given the anger expressed here daily by the same people over and over again). Good luck, Columbian!by d rourk : 10/9/08 11:20am - Report Abuse

The reason newspapers don't fare well online is because online advertising keeps papers honest. It's easy to track exactly how many people click an ad, it's nearly impossible to calculate how many people take the time to actually read an ad in the paper. Basically like housing and stocks advertising in newspapers was overvalued and is now reaching the correct level.by IMHO MAN : 10/9/08 12:38pm - Report Abuse
The Columbians problems are rooted in the integrity of it's staff. I cancelled my subscription 2 years ago after I had enough. How does a reporter covering a criminal trial consistently get the facts wrong when they are available to her through a wide range of documents? Why do editors write provocative headlines that don't support the context of a story? What is the justification for the editorial staff to offer inflammatory opinions about local issues, in complete ignorance of the facts that are posted on other media outlets? It's because they are desperate to sell newspapers or get web hits, and are pandering to peoples emotions instead of being honest. It nauseates me to read Lou B write about the Columbian being the force that keeps politicians and others honest in our community. If that were true you would actually report a story without your own political interests at heart. You sunk your own credibility and you own this.by Johnny Utah : 10/9/08 3:22pm - Report Abuse
The Columbian is a victim of their own empire. The Columbian shamefully destroyed customers business with their absolute negligent business articles that in most cases were in correct with facts. Customers who easily were the largest advertisers in your newspaper had no other choice but to boycott the "two-bit" shoty paper that you may want to change to The Daily Slug.by Johnny Utah : 10/9/08 3:33pm - Report Abuse

I amamazed at the vitriolic comments concerning The Columbian's financial difficulties. Are these people upset because they didn't receive a Sunday comics umbrella? Good riddance. I bet the City buys the building. It would make a nice bookend for the money pit Hilton next door. This town is a ridiculous joke. By the way Jedidath, your neighbors and your neighborhood newspaper didn't deserve their homes/30 million dollar buildings in the first place. Amazing the readers here coming to the defense of the Columbian. I expect to be lied to by politicians but would NEVER expect a newspaper editor to lie to his readers. Hey Lou nice of you to offer such a deep response to the criticism. One question: when is it right for a newspaper editor to lie to his readers? (C,mon Brancaccio give me some smart ass reply since I don't really expect a thoughtful one.) Didn't you write a summertime column minimizing the impact Scott Campbell's failed downtown gamble on the Columbian? M Johnson - a recent example for you. Vancouver's settlement with a former Police Officer. The Columbian wrote a stinging editorial talking about the shameful culture at VPD. The other media outlets, and subsequent testimony for 3 weeks in front of City Council reported that VPD officers weren't even involved, that it was management and city leaders who made these decisions.
