Don't let money come between you and your spouse

Monday, October 27 | 11:14 a.m.

Money can be a major source of stress in relationships. One person might be a saver and the other a spender. Or couples clash over how to spend discretionary funds and how much debt they're comfortable carrying.

"The Today Show" recently offered tips on ways to keep money from coming between you and your loved ones. The tips included making spending plans, rather than budgets, since the former has more positive connotations and the latter connotes rigid self-denial.

Other suggestions included making sure each person has an individual account, in addition to joint checking and savings accounts. That way when one person wants to splurge, he or she can do so with his or her own money and not have to ask for permission.

For all six tips on navigating finances amicably, see this article by Michele Bender on msnbc.com.
