The race to the Class 3A Greaters St. Helens League girls soccer title may have lacked the drama of past seasons, but that did not dimish the excitement for the Union Titans on Tuesday.
Megan Dire scored three goals, and Alyssa Vera and Brina Sych each added a goal and assist as Union rolled past Hudson’s Bay 8-0 to clinched its first 3A GSHL crown with one match to play.
“It’s a nice reward for all the hard work and sacrifice the girls have made this season,” Union coach Kelsey Burris said.
The win was the Titans’ eighth in a row after opening league play with a 1-1 tie with Columbia River. Union improved to 13-0-2 overall.
In fact, that goal scored by River in their Sept. 30 was the only goal the Titans have allowed all league season. All 13 wins this season for Union have been by shutout.
The Titans will look to complete an unbeaten league season Thursday at Camas.
“We want to finish strong and prepare for the playoffs,” Burris said.
With the win, Union wrapped up the No. 1 seed to the bi-district playoffs. The Titans will play the No. 7 team from the Seamount/South Puget Sound League at Camas on Nov. 8.
Camas 1, Columbia River 0 — Annike Sumpter’s goal in the 69th minute lifted the Papermakers to the home win. Camas has clinched second place in the 3A GSHL, and will travel for a bi-district playoff game on Nov. 8.
Columbia River will play Prairie at 7 p.m. next Tuesday at Camas to determine the league’s third team in bi-district playoffs.
Class 4A soccer — Despite losing 2-1 to Heritage on Tuesday, the Skyview girls soccer team is the Class 4A St. Helens League champion for the third year in a row.
The Storm finished their league schedule with 6 wins, 2 losses and 2 ties to win a tight race among four teams for the title. Mountain View also went 6-2-2 in league matches, but Skyview gets the top spot because it beat the Thunder once, while the teams tied in their other meeting.
As champion, Skyview will await the survivor of the league’s playoffs and play a district championship match on Nov. 6. As the runner-up, Mountain View will play Nov. 4 against the team that emerges from playoff matches this Thursday and Saturday.
Two teams from the 4A GSHL advance to bi-district playoff matches, with the No. 1 seed hosting a match and the No. 2 seed traveling for bi-district play.
1A Trico League — Shay Cheeseman and Shelby Wilkerson each scored twice as La Center beat Kalama 7-0 to clinch a share of first place. The Wildcats and White Salmon, who split their two games, battle at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Kalama High School for the league’s automatic berth in the state tournament.
Leanna Ludes had 29 assists as Skyview spread around its attack in a 3-0 volleyball win over Kelso on Tuesday that clinched the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League championship for the Storm.
The 25-16, 25-10, 25-10 win on Tuesday improved Skyview to 9-0 in league play and assured the Storm of a second consecutive league title.
The Prairie Falcons clinched the regular-season championship in the Class 3A Greater St. Helens League and earned direct berth to next week’s district title match.
Haley Doerfler had 13 kills, Cassie Irwin added eight, and Camryn Irwin had 24 assists in Prairie’s 3-0 win over Camas. Scores were: 25-21, 25-23, 25-23.
Prairie improved to 9-0 in league play with one match remaining.
