1. Parade honors vets

The Veterans Day Parade begins with the firing of howitzer cannons. Its grand marshal is Washington’s Lieutenant Gov. Brad Owen. More than 100 organizations will participate in the parade, including high school marching bands, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops and equestrian units.

Hours: 11 a.m. today.

Where: The parade begins at East Reserve Street and Evergreen Boulevard, Vancouver. It continues west on Evergreen Boulevard to C Street. It heads south on C Street to West Eighth Street. It heads west on West Eighth Street and disbands near Esther Street.

2. Kite festival soars

The Camas Indoor Kite Festival takes off this weekend. As part of the festival, kites will be flown to music. The routines will be scored by a panel of judges on showmanship, how the routine lines up with the music and how well the kites are flown.

Events include a kite ballet competition, demonstrations, tricks, kite-making activities for children and lessons.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Admission: $2, $3 for a family of four.

3. Duo in touch with muse

Celtic Muse takes the stage for a concert Sunday.

The harp and flute duo will perform traditional Celtic music.

When: 4 p.m. Sunday.

Where: St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 426 E. Fourth Plain Blvd., Vancouver.

Admission: $10, $8 for students and seniors.

4. Lantern tours light up the night

Fort Vancouver’s Lantern Tours give visitors the chance to see the fort after dark. Visitors can carry their own lantern with a park ranger through the counting house, fur store, kitchen, chief factor’s house and bake house.

Visitors will learn about activities that took place after dark at the fort. Following the tour, visitors can have a cup of hot cider and ask questions about the fort.

The tour is recommended for children 10 and older.

Reservations are required. Another tour takes place Nov. 22.

5. Motley ‘Madagascar’ crew heads to Africa

The escaped zoo animals from the 2005 animated hit film “Madagascar” return to the big screen this weekend in “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.” The film follows Alex (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty (Chris Rock) and the rest of the crew as they leave Madagascar and wind up stranded in an African jungle. The animals meet others from their species for the first time — but having spent their whole lives in the Central Park Zoo, the animals have difficulty communicating.

“Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” is rated PG.

Deception at heart of “The Heiress”


The Clark College Theater Department’s production of “The Heiress” continues through Nov. 22.

The play follows Catherine, the daughter of a wealthy widower. Catherine falls in love with a man who secretly wants a share of her fortune.

Catherine’s father sees through the man’s intentions and threatens to cut off her dowry if she follows through with her plans to elope.

Mraz bounces back from hiatus with tour


Soulful singer Jason Mraz stops by Portland for a concert this week. The singer and songwriter, who made a name for himself with a soothing sound, is touring in support of his third and latest album, “We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things.”
