With the holidays quickly approaching, police want to make sure an influx of hurried travelers are buckling up.
From Nov. 17 to Dec. 7, 60 police and sheriff agencies will be conducting special patrols targeting seatbelt violators statewide. The Vancouver and Battle Ground police departments, the sheriff's office and Washington State Patrol will oversee the Click it or Ticket nighttime sting here.
Not wearing a seatbelt or wearing it improperly (under your arm or behind your back) can result in a $124 fine.
Research shows that seatbelts can reduce the risk of injury or death by 70 percent, according to a Washington Traffic Safety Commission bulletin. Authorities estimate 4 percent, or more than 237,000 drivers or passengers statewide, travel without wearing seatbelts.
Some violators are also found to be driving with suspended or revoked licenses, driving under the influence convictions or felony warrants, the bulletin said.

As I understand it, Washington has the second highest rate of compliance in the country regarding seat belt usage behind Hawaii. I question the use of taxpayer dollars to target seat belt violations.
