Police report: Shopping cart tossed onto Interstate 5

Someone threw a shopping cart off the East 33rd Street overpass and onto north Interstate 5 late Thursday night.

The cart hit the hood of a car and bounced back into oncoming traffic, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Dave Bourland. Another car swerved to miss it. The cart was removed from the roadway before another car struck it.

The first car sustained hood damage and cracks on the windshield. The driver wasn’t hurt, and a passenger received a minor cut to the ear from shattered glass, Bourland said.

“They were lucky — very fortunate,” he said.

Witnesses told police they saw two people running east off the overpass after dropping the cart at about 10:30 p.m. But police don’t have any suspect descriptions.

Last month, assailants in several incidents tossed heavy objects off overpasses or onto Northeast Padden Parkway and Interstate 205. Police arrested two teens in connection to at least one of those incidents.

State troopers and Vancouver police officers are investigating whether the most recent case is connected with those, Bourland said.
