Radio tags speed Blaine border crossing

Tuesday, November 18 | 10:15 a.m.

New technology should speed up entry into the United States at the Blaine border crossing - if drivers have identification cards with radio frequency identification tags.

Scanned tags give officers information by the time the driver pulls up to the Customs and Border Protection booth.

The Department of Homeland Security is putting the technology into use Tuesday at Blaine and Nogales, Ariz. RFID technology will expand next year to other high-volume border crossings with Canada and Mexico.

A spokesman, Mike Milne, told The Seattle Times the technology should help travelers to the 2010 Winter Olympics in British Columbia.

RFID tags are available on a passport card, enhanced Washington driver's license or NEXUS card for trusted travelers.
