The much anticipated first blast of snow this season has Department of Transportation officials urging drivers to take things slow and prepare cars before hitting the road.
High winds and snow at lower elevations are in the forecast for Clark County this weekend, which may stick around next week.
WSDOT urged these precautions for drivers:
--On ice and snow, take it slow.
--Plan extra time to reach your destination, especially when venturing across mountain passes.
--Slow down when approaching intersections, offramps, bridges or shady spots. These areas sometimes have black ice.
--Carry chains and know the traction and chain requirements: Mountain pass traction and chain requirements are available on highway advisory signs and advisory radio.
--Dress warmly and carry blankets, water and other survival gear in case you get trapped in your car.

Every year I find it ludicrous and alarming that these simple and obvious seasonal factoids have to be reiterated. Are there really that many (expletive deleted) drivers out there who forget that - durrr! - snow be slippery and slow down and operate the vehicle in a competent, professional manner? How very sad. Just as bad is the "it just rained so the roads are slick" reminders. Again: durrrrr!
