Scrap sale of 4 Washington ferries on hold

Wednesday, January 28 | 12:45 p.m.

A deal to sell four old Washington state ferries for $500,000 for scrap is on hold.

The Seattle Times reports the buyer, Environmental Recycling Systems, wants a delay because of the decline in metal prices. It had planned to tow the vessels to Mexico.

The state is seeking new bids for the 80-year old boats that were pulled from service in November of 2007 because of rusting hulls. The Illahee, Nisqually, Klickitat and Quinault are now moored off Bainbridge Island.
