it's not just rapists. I can't blame her it's not a safe world anymore.. that is why I jog on my machine at home. country roads aren't a good place to jog anyways.

There is more danger than just of the human kind. Never mind that Yacolt is right next to the Cascades where mountain lions and black bear roam. If I were living in Yacolt or any other town bumped up against the Cascades or any other mountain range, I too would have protection with me. I'm sure she has learned her lesson regarding firearm safety. Maybe a refresher course would be handy!

Hopefully she is recovering well and able to be back on her feet soon!

Her Dad should also ask her to take possession of her senses. What the heck is she afraid of?

The problem with gun owners like her is that they carry weapons and they are irresponsible. I'd bet she's also a lousy shot, meaning we're all at risk if she decides to use her weapon in public. Take cover!!!

A sad, sad statement on our society today, even out in the boondocks like Yacolt. Small towns aren't safe anymore. You can't take your morning jog anywhere without some drugged up creep climbing out of the bushes to do God knows what. Not all of us have the luxury of indoor exercise space nor can we afford gym memberships, especially now with the economy in the toilet. Maybe if we had REAL laws, with real teeth in them, it wouldn't have come to this. Sad, sad, sad.

I live in Yacolt & I carry a gun when I walk to the other side of my property - even with 3 large dogs with me! We have a black bear that roams our property, a Bobcat that lives under our hay shed & a pack of very brave coyotes. The dogs have been to the vet twice for fighting with the coyotes & once with the Bobcat. I carry a gun when I'm riding horses. And I live on the main road in Yacolt/Amboy. Damn straight I carry a gun out there & would if I were jogging, too!

It may be in her best interest to find a GROUP of people to run with and the threat of bodily harm by another person is removed,,,you only have to protect yourself from yourself then,,,

This is a typical scenario. Person carries firearm to protect themselves from a psychologically hyper-inflated threat and ends up only harming themselves or others. Fear causes people to dramatically reinterpret reality, much like those who fear flying despite its relative safety. I'm sorry she hurt herself, but I have no sympathy for her, considering it was entirely her own doing.

Jeff Johnson, your comment is so typical of those with hyper-inflated fears. The facts are clear: carrying (or having in your home) a gun is strongly associated with BEING INJURED BY YOUR OWN WEAPON. Not in all cases, no. But there is a very strong correlation of self-danger when carrying, or storing, a weapon. If there is an attack, most often, the average citizen with a gun isn't prepared to use it accurately, and it most often gets used AGAINST them or against an innocent bystander. Jonathan Lam is absolutely correct, looking at the evidence. Of course, there are exceptions. There always are. But the pattern is that people (or bystanders) are often hurt with their own weapons.

T Hurd: This is exactly what I am talking about! The ignorance of others who do not know the behaviors of wildlife other than the rats running through their city sewers suddenly know what is good for people in the countryside! She had a flippin careless accident that she is paying the price.

As far as "Tired" is concerned, possibly her screaming and ranting about the pain in her shin along with the gun going off was probably enough to scare the black bears and any potential attacker away anyhow. No pea shooter is a match with any wild, attacking beast - even the two-legged ones near Dougan Falls up the Washougal river.

I will say this, it is unsafe for any woman to jog alone, whether it be in the city or in the country. If tandem running is not available, a good sized dog like a Newfoundland or Bernese Mountain dog or a well-trained guard dog on a leash such as a rottie or doberman would help.

Jonathan Lam: I don't know where you reside, but I think you need a reality check. This is not a hyper-inflated threat or a reinterpretation of reality to a woman. The truth is that firearm retraining would be in her best interest. It would also be a good idea if she learned what the safety device is on a gun.

I don't blame this lady for running with a gun...She should do what she needs to do to keep herself safe. It's not like she's on the Portland waterfront. She doesn't know if she's going to ******** some crazy who is dumping off a dead body or some meth freak who is on a binge and hallucinating. Or better yet, some sexual predator who is on a search for his next victim. Accidents happen. If you've never had an accident then goody for you. But don't knock a woman for doing what she needs to do to defend herself from crazies or hungry wildlife. Hope she heals quickly and glad that she's going to be okay!
