TACOMA — Chawncy McClenan picked the perfect time to have the jump of her life.
The Heritage High School senior exceeded her personal best and the school record by one foot Thursday, finishing fourth in the girls triple jump at the Class 4A state track and field meet at Mount Tahoma High School.
"My goal was just to make it to finals," McClenan said. "I barely made it to finals, so I was like, 'Just go have fun.' "
McClenan was in eighth place through four rounds of the six-round competition. That's when she recorded a leap of 37 feet, 10 inches, moving up in the standings. The event was won by Andrea Geubelle of Curtis with a mark of 40-11 3/4. Maggie Pietka of Mountain View finished tied for 10th.
