TACOMA — Washougal’s Katelyn Wright had good reason to enjoy her first trip to the state track and field meet.
"I tied the school record, so I’m excited," the freshman said after finishing second in the Class 2A girls high jump at Mount Tahoma High School. "I love state so far; I’m having a really good time."
Wright cleared 5 feet, 3 inches, setting a personal record and finishing behind only Tasha Luu of Colville. Wright cleared 5-3 on her first attempt, but couldn’t match the winning mark of 5-4.
Charity Arn of Woodland tied for seventh with a height of 5 feet.
Wright said: "I got over 5-3 no problem, which surprised the heck out of me. I was actually pretty calm about the whole ‘state’ thing, but the heat was definitely a factor."
In the process, Wright and Luu might have set the stage for future state meets. Luu also is a freshman.
Wright said: "I was like, ‘I’m a freshman.’ I didn’t expect to make it this far."
