Wounded soldier takes command of Fort Lewis unit

Thursday, June 18 | 10:00 a.m.

A wounded soldier has taken command of the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Lewis.

Lt. Col. Danny Dudek's feet were paralyzed by a roadside bomb blast in 2007 in Iraq. The 40-year-old uses a wheelchair and can walk with crutches.

In Wednesday's ceremony, The News Tribune of Tacoma reports he took responsibility for about 600 soldiers with long-term or complex medical issues. It's one of 39 such units in the military.

The Madigan Army Medical Center commander, Maj. Gen. Patricia Horoho, says his experience in the medical system gives him a unique insight for his new job.

Dudek says the deployment of three Fort Lewis Stryker brigades in Iraq will likely increase the number of injured at the base.
