2nd boring machine stuck in KingCo sewage tunnel

Wednesday, June 24 | 10:00 a.m.

A second tunnel boring machine has broken down while digging the outlet for a new King County sewage treatment plant near Woodinville.

The county says the machine is 330 feet underground in the Kenmore area, waiting for repairs to the cutter head. The contractor laid off 67 workers, about half the workers, until construction resumes.

Workers are digging a 13-mile tunnel to carry treated water to Puget Sound near Edmonds.

Another boring machine is broken about 340 feet under Bothell. Despite the tunnel problems the county says it expects to begin operating the $1.8 billion treatment plant by the middle of 2011.
