Blazer Banter

Confirmed: Sergio is gone

Thursday, June 25 | 4:44 p.m.

BY BRIAN HENDRICKSON

I just got conformation from two sources that a report posted on DraftExpress.com is indeed accurate: Sergio Rodriguez has been traded to Sacramento along with Portland's 38th pick in exchange for the Kings' 31st pick.

This does not come as much of a surprise since Rodriguez has expressed a desire to get more playing time, whether that was in Portland or with another team. But with Steve Blake giving the Blazers a solid starting presence, and the commitment Portland appears to be making toward developing Jerryd Bayless as their point guard of the future, it's seemed logical that Rodriguez would be moved in the deal was there.
Why deal him for a second-round pick? Simple: More cap space. Dumping Rodriguez's salary knocks $1.9 million off the Blazers' salary cap and gives them more flexibility on the free agency market next month.
