I used to work at a different Washougal lumber mill. The whole time I was there, the threat of fire always freaked me out. A lumber mill makes piles and piles of sawdust and other tinder; there's lots of machinery around, and some of it gets very hot, or even throws sparks; and if you're not careful, some of the larger piles of sawdust can actually start composting and generate internal heat.

In general, the mills do all they can to mitigate the threat of fire, but it is a very real threat nontheless.

My husband worked for Hambleton last summer and it was the most rinky-dink set-up ever. He even said a year ago he was amazed that whole place hadn't burnt down or that someone hadn't been seriously injured there. Lots of OSHA violations. I'm thankful no one was hurt and maybe now someone will pay attention here and get this place in shape.

hambleton has been arround a bit longer than 1960 i do believe, but regardless of that an operation such as this does not survive and prosper for fifty years if it is 'rinky dink'....
