Longview, Wash., paper mill adds 25 workers

Thursday, June 25 | 8:30 a.m.

After cutting its work force by 40 percent over the past two years, Longview Fibre Paper and Packaging Co. has hired about 25 workers because of improving sales.

The mill currently employs about 1,020 people. That's up from about 1,000 employees at the beginning of the year. The company employed about 1,700 in 2007, when it was bought by Toronto-based Brookfield Management Associates.

Longview Fibre Chief Operating Officer Randy Nebel tells The Daily News that about 20 of the 25 newly hired workers are former mill workers who had been laid off.

Nebel says the company plans to add another 20 workers by the end of 2009.

In May, Cowlitz County had a 14.2 percent unemployment rate. According to government figures, the paper industry in the county has lost 300 jobs during the past year.
