For years, The Associated Press has been selecting all-state teams for football and boys and girls basketball. But for many years, all-state teams in other sports were largely overlooked or nonexistent.
And that's where Rene Ferran of Tri-City Herald stepped in. A couple of years ago, Ferran began compiling a series of all-state teams for volleyball, soccer, baseball and softball. He compiled the ballot by collecting all-league and all-area teams from around the state, organizing them into an easy-to-read format, then sent them out to media members across the state for voting.
Now, simply voting on these all-state teams can be an arduous task. Just in the spring there are teams in up to six classifications in three different sport that need to be voted upon, not to mention players and coaches of the year.
I generally have to block off a good amount of my time just to look over all of the information in the ballot to make as close to an informed selection as possible.
I cannot imagine the amount of time and effort that goes into compiling these ballot and tabulating the result.
So prep athletes and fans across the state owe a bit a gratitude to Rene Ferran for his tireless efforts.
