Can you believe it? Portland's favorite pre-emptive hangover therapy is headed into the suburbs.

Since 2001, Voodoo Donuts has sold oddball munchies — bacon on a maple bar, Cocoa Puffs on the Triple Chocolate Penetration Donut — to hungry hipsters from a 24-hour hole-in-the-wall off Burnside Street. This spring, the company has also been rolling its fancy dough out to coffee shops from Clackamas, Ore., to Ridgefield and all the way along the Oregon Coast. Its Portland presence will stick around, too.

It's aiming to supply 10 retailers in Clark County, Voodoo saleswoman Kimberly Litkie said this month.

"We're picky about who sells," Litkie said. "They have to, you know, have the magic."

But Voodoo's not the only magic in this town. As any Vancouver doughnut aficionado could tell you, there are doughnuts these days for every taste and every face.

Welcome to the block, Voodoo. Time to meet the neighbors.

1. The yuppie doughnut

Dot Donuts

The big idea: It's a doughnut shop disguised as a high-end ice-cream parlor, with 20 gorgeous custom flavors and (you guessed it) hand-scooped ice cream available, too.

Decor highlight: Dream doughnuts illustrated by Mill Plain Elementary students.

Where: 1825 S.E. 164th Ave. in Fisher's Landing, next to Big Al's.

Prices: For the simplest: $1, or $12 for a baker's dozen of 13. For the fanciest: $1.50/$15.50.

Open: Tuesday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fry schedule: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

2. The grandparent doughnut

Donut Nook

The big idea: Vancouver's comfiest doughnut shop, hands down. Couches in one nook, tables along two walls and dozens of the owner's own photographs on the walls. Donna has worked the register since 1987.

Decor highlight: Homemade sign: "$1.50 to harass the help."

Where: 4403 N.E. St. Johns Blvd. in Minnehaha.

Prices: For all varieties, including fritters, maple bars and cinnamon rolls: 90 cents, or $7.40 for a dozen. Yesterday's leftovers are the best deal in town: 55 cents.

Open: 5:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Close at 1 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Fry schedule: 5:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., including shipments to local mini-marts. Fresh stuff at the shop stops hitting the shelves about 11 a.m.

3. The working family doughnut

Krispy Kreme

The big idea: Doing for the doughnut what McDonald's did for the hamburger, complete with a drive-through and fresh doughnuts every afternoon. You won't find this taste in Portland — there's one joint in each suburban county, and this one is ours.

Decor highlight: Retro-diner interior.

Where: 8517 N.E. Andresen Road, Barberton.

Prices: For glazed, 99 cents or $8.99 for a dozen. For flavors, $1.09/$9.99. For maple bars and other big treats, $1.39/$12.99.

Open: 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. Open to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Fry schedule: 4 to 10:30 a.m., then again 3 to 7:30 p.m.

4. The hipster doughnut

Voodoo Donuts

The big idea: If Dot Donuts feels like a Ben & Jerry's parlor, Voodoo's menu looks like Ben and Jerry just got back from a late-night grocery run. Think Cap'n Crunch, crumbled Oreo cookies and mini marshmallows.

Where: River Maiden Coffee in downtown Vancouver, Mon Ami Café in Uptown Village, the Dragonfly Cafés by the county courthouse and in the county public health center, Lava Java in Ridgefield, Mugs Coffee in Hazel Dell.

Prices: Varies by location from just over $1 for cake to more than $3 for the bacon maple bar.

Open: Varies by location.

Fry schedule: Clark County deliveries start at 6 a.m. and finish by 9 a.m. The frying for those batches starts in Portland at midnight.
