Bank robbery near Tacoma, Wash., ends with arrest

Wednesday, July 1 | 9:45 a.m.

Authorities say a bank robbery north of Tacoma, Wash., has ended with one recently unemployed man in custody and no damage or injuries.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said a 37-year-old man told a teller at a Bank of America branch in Fife, Wash., that he had a bomb Tuesday morning and asked for money. But then the man stopped what he was doing, saying he wanted to be arrested, and let all the customers and employees leave.

The man stayed inside the bank for several minutes before surrendering to officers.

Troyer says the man lost his job last week and may have been suicidal.

A black bag the man was carrying was disrupted by the police bomb squad. Squad members say it contained personal toiletry items.
