Missing the fireworks? Head to Felida

Tuesday, June 30 | 11:31 p.m.

THE COLUMBIAN

Just because the big Fourth of July fireworks show at Fort Vancouver has been cancelled this year, don't think there's nothing patriotic going on in Clark County.

The Felida Neighborhood Association is sponsoring its 11th annual children's parade featuring bikes, trikes and wagons but no motorized vehicles. The parade has grown every year since 1999 and reportedly drew 3,500 people in 2008.

Participants should start lining up at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Felida Community Park on Northwest 122nd Street, west of 36th Avenue. Local streets will close at 11 a.m., and the parade gets underway at 11:15. It will return to the park for a picnic lunch provided by the Lions Club and free Krispy Kreme doughnuts. There will be antique fire engine rides, face painting, button making and more.

Several environmental, nonprofit and public-service booths will be set up at the park along with a replica of a Lewis and Clark Expedition Camp. At 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., there will be historical presentations by Roger Wendlick — aka George Drouillard, a key member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Bring lawn chairs, blankets, sunblock and umbrellas.
