Susan Enfield, Evergreen's former deputy superintendent, has been hired as chief academic officer for Seattle Public Schools and will start her job Monday. She and two other administrators were laid off in May in response to state and district budget cuts.
Enfield, 41, spent three years with the Evergreen district; she replaced Superintendent John Deeder as deputy superintendent in August 2006. For two years prior, she was director of the Office of Teaching and Learning for Portland Public Schools. In addition to building a robust rubber ducky collection in her office, Enfield initiated the development a five-year plan to implement a new math curriculum. As an academic — she earned a master's degree from Stanford and a doctorate in education from Harvard — she studied the efficacy of small school districts and standardized testing.
Ms. Enfield is a capable and compassionate administrator who is child-centered in her approach to problem-solving. Seattle is getting one of Clark County's best.

too smart for Evergreen District, which usually relies on homegrown sycophants for Leadership positions.
