Auburn golfer sentenced for assault

Friday, July 10 | 1:30 p.m.

A golfer was sentenced to a year-and-a-half in prison for bashing another golfer over the head with a 6-iron during a fight at the Auburn Golf Course.

The 34-year-old man, Nicholas Jay Shampine of Puyallup, had been convicted of assault in King County Superior Court.

At Thursday's sentencing in Kent he said he was sorry, but also said he was defending his brother. The fight broke out between two groups of golfers in July of last year over slow play.

The victim, 45-year-old James Compton of Puyallup, says he still has memory loss and headaches caused by the injury.
