Washington State Patrol Russell Buckman, 36, of West Linn, Ore., died Saturday when his car struck the rear end of a commercial vehicle while fleeing a Washington State Patrol trooper on Interstate 5 in La Center.

A driver who led state troopers on a high-speed chase down Interstate 5 early Saturday died when his car slammed into the back of a truck, according to the Washington State Patrol.

A WSP bulletin reports that Russell Buckman, 36, of West Linn, Ore., was speeding southbound on I-5 at 1:50 a.m. Saturday in a 1998 Oldsmobile when he passed a state trooper near Kalama River Road in Cowlitz County.

The trooper put on his siren and lights and chased the Oldsmobile, which continued south to Woodland. Another trooper joined the pursuit.

The Oldsmobile reached speeds of 100 mph, according to the WSP, and continued south on I-5 as far as the La Center exit, where it ran into the back of a truck that was in the center lane of the three-lane interstate highway.

The semi truck driver, Ricky Corbitt of Clackamas, Ore., pulled to the right shoulder with the Oldsmobile stuck under the back of his truck.

Buckman died on impact.
