Tuesday, May 06, 2008 By CAMI JONER, Columbian staff writerWal-Mart could open a store in Woodland by 2010 if state transportation officials approve the company’s proposed designs for road access.
Wal-Mart wants to build a SuperCenter on the west side of Interstate 5 at Dike Access Road. The state is requiring traffic roundabouts on the east and west sides of I-5, drainage improvements to lessen the roadway’s affect on nearby Burris Creek, new lighting and upgraded pedestrian facilities before giving the green light.
A Cowlitz County Superior Court judge ruled last fall that Wal-Mart would need to provide the road improvements before it could build the new store.
Dave Bellinger, design services engineer for the Washington State Department of Transportation said he would spend the next month reviewing Wal-Mart’s roundabout design before returning it to the company with his comments and suggestions.
Wal-Mart expects to submit plans this fall for a 163,000-square-foot store, said Jennifer Spall, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman.
Spall said the new store could open in 2010.
“We expect it to take approximately six months to get the approvals we need,” she said.
