Tech firms will push for bigger silicon wafers
Wednesday, May 07, 2008 By The ColumbianIntel Corp., Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announced this week that they will work together to spread the manufacture of 18-inch silicon wafers in the semiconductor industry.
The wafers can hold twice as many computer chips as the 12-inch wafers that are at the cutting edge. The consortium hopes to start the transition to larger wafers by 2012.
In Clark County, Vancouver-based SEH America manufactures 8-inch and 12-inch wafers. In Camas, WaferTech, which is owned by TSMC, makes chips, as do Sharp Microelectronics and Linear Technology. |
