Intel Corp., Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announced this week that they will work together to spread the manufacture of 18-inch silicon wafers in the semiconductor industry.

The wafers can hold twice as many computer chips as the 12-inch wafers that are at the cutting edge. The consortium hopes to start the transition to larger wafers by 2012.

In Clark County, Vancouver-based SEH America manufactures 8-inch and 12-inch wafers.  In Camas, WaferTech, which is owned by TSMC, makes chips, as do Sharp Microelectronics and Linear Technology.
