From the opening-credit font (a sort of default disco-cursive), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde disappoints. This update stars Dougray Scott (Desperate Housewives as the good doctor whose experiments conjure an evil alter ego with a taste for leather pants…and murder! Scott does what he can — he's stunned and remorseful as Jekyll, swaggery as Hyde. Less riveting are the repeated transformation scenes, in which he lurches and vomits (Limit to three, please.) The film devolves into a dull yet baffling courtroom drama, and you may soon identify with Jekyll, begging for sweet release. C-Gillian Flynn
