Traffic on southbound Interstate 5 was snarled much of Wednesday afternoon after a four-car chain reaction collision on the bridge. Stopped traffic was the trigger for the accident, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The collisions occurred about 1:30 p.m. and blocked the two right lanes of the span. Involved were a 1999 Ford pickup driven by Roman P. Zosim of Ridgefield; a 2002 Honda Civic driven by Laura A. Bolster of Portland; a 2001 Ford Taurus driven by Mollie M. Emig-Pearce of Aloha, Ore., and a 1996 Saturn driven by James F. Herrod of Portland.

According to the state patrol, traffic in the right lane was stopped. When Zosim attempted to switch lanes to avoid the stopped cars, he struck Bolster’s Honda, which triggered the chain reaction accident. Zosim was cited for making an unsafe lane change.

Bolster reportedly suffered some neck pain and was transported to a local hospital for examination. Her condition was not available.

Traffic backed up beyond the 39th Street overpass as a result of the accident.
