Gray’s at the Park offers a weekly Sunday brunch but will be expanding the buffet offerings for Mother’s Day.

By KAREN PERSSON, for The Columbian

Spring seems to stoke an appetite for brunch, and Mother’s Day provides the perfect opportunity to indulge that craving.

Here are four restaurants that offer brunch buffets every Sunday, with expanded offerings on Mother’s Day.

Wherever you decide to go, let Mom know she taught you well by calling in advance for reservations. Some restaurants only have afternoon seatings available and others are already sold out.

Gray’s at the Park

301 West Sixth St., Vancouver; 360-828-4343.

Why: Food quality and presentation are top notch at Gray’s. The professional staff keeps every item presentable and spatulas and spoons gunk-free.

The lineup: Shrimp cocktail, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs with cheese and bell peppers, fresh steamed vegetables, potato wedges, waffles, cheeses, fresh fruit, cakes, muffins, cookies, scones and eggs Benedict.

Standouts: Shredded potatoes with cheddar, fresh steamed vegetables, warm plates, well-maintained food temperatures, superb service.

Pitfalls: Not as many buffet items as some of the other brunches. On Mother’s Day, however, Gray’s will have an expanded brunch with additional selections. To view the menu, go to graysatthepark.com.

Price: The regular Sunday brunch is $19.95, $21.95 with champagne and $13.95 for children ages 6 to 12. The Mother’s Day expanded brunch is $27.95, $29.95 with champagne and $13.95 for children ages 6 to 12. Kids 5 and younger eat brunch for free.

Skamania Lodge

1131 S.W. Skamania Lodge Way, Stevenson; 509-427-7700.

Why: It’s a 45-minute drive from Vancouver, but brunch in the lodge’s Cascade Room comes with a sweeping view of the Columbia River Gorge.

The lineup: Breakfast breads, fruit, yogurt, prepared salads, omelets cooked to order, potlatch salmon, prime rib, apricot glazed ham, seafood harvest entrées and bakery treats

Standouts: Cheese blintzes with raspberries, eggs rancheros, friendly and attentive staff.

Pitfalls: The Cascade Room stretches from nearly one end of the lodge to the other and has capacity for a crowd, which means staff has little time for tidying.

Price: The regular Sunday brunch is $27.95 with or without champagne, $16.95 children 7 to 12,  $10.95 for kids 4 to 6. The Mother’s Day expanded brunch is $38.95 with or without champagne, $19.95 for kids 8 to 12 and $11.95 for kids 4 to 7. Kids 3 and younger eat for free.

Pacific Grill and Chowder House at the Quay

100 Columbia St., Vancouver; 360-750-4940.

Why: Vancouver’s old stand-by provides a view of the Columbia River and familiar food options.

The lineup: Omelets made to order, seafood, egg dishes, chicken, beef, breakfast breads, peach cobbler, cold pasta dishes, salads, steamed vegetables, bacon, sausage, fruit and cheese.

Standouts: Bread pudding, peach cobbler, a nostalgic version of pistachio ambrosia and good service.

Pitfalls: No place cards identify the items. Food temperatures could be better maintained. Shrimp cocktail contains shrimp still in the shell.

Price: The regular Sunday brunch is $19.95 (champagne with free refills is $3.99), $10.96 for children ages 6 to 12. Mother’s Day expanded brunch is $28.95 (plus $3.99 for champagne), $25.95 for seniors 55 and over, $13.95 children 6 to 12. Kids 5 and younger eat for free.

The Original Oak Tree Restaurant

1020 Atlantic St., Woodland; 360-225-8446.

Why: Six weekly rotating themes keep selections interesting, and plentiful tables ensure quick seating.

The lineup: European Brunch featured when I ate there includes a crepe station, quiche, potatoes O’Brien, fruit, cheese, cold meats, grilled vegetables, pasta salads, breakfast breads, sausage, bacon and numerous desserts. Details on the other themes are available at
originaloaktreerestaurant.com.

Standouts: Orange crepes, individual quiche pastries and friendly wait staff.

Pitfalls: Supply exceeds demand so some food sits out long enough to lose its appeal. Crepes are pre-made and reheated as needed.

Price: Regular Sunday brunch is $17.99 for adults (includes champagne), $15.99 for seniors 60 and older, $12.99 for children ages 5 to 10. Mother’s Day expanded brunch is $19.99 for adults (champagne is extra), $12.99 kids ages 5 to 10. Kids 4 and younger eat for free.
