“Speed Racer,” a live action adaptation of a 1960s Japanese cartoon series, is in movie theaters this weekend.
The film follows the title character, Speed (Emile Hirsch), who was born into a family of racers.
Speed finds out that races are being fixed by corporate interests to maximize profits, so he works to beat the duplicitous group at its own game. That means entering the same race that claimed his brother’s life.
“Speed Racer’s” supporting cast is rounded out with Christina Ricci, Matthew Fox, John Goodman and Susan Sarandon.
The film is rated PG.

Family band blends styles
The Camas Performing Arts Series continues today with a performance from Everything Fitz.
The Fitzgerald family band, from Ontario, Canada, offers a mix of Celtic, bluegrass, Western swing and step dance routines.

Mother’s Day gifts, straight from the garden

Local band takes the stage in Ridgefield
Bluegrass-inspired folk quartet Misty River offers a Mother’s Day concert this weekend in Ridgefield.
The group, led by Vancouver’s Carol Harley, will mix longtime crowd favorites and songs from its 2007 release, “Stories.”

Film fans get fill of zombies
The Hollywood Theatre hosts the second day of Zompire: The Undead Film Festival.
The festival highlights efforts from filmmakers to portray zombies in new ways. It offers notable feature-length zombie films, short films and zombie film trailers.
Fans of the undead can catch the 2004 remake of “Dawn of the Dead,” “Vampire Circus” and “From Dusk Till Dawn,” written by Quentin Tarantino.
