Arctic chill to blow in tonight

Brace for it. Winter’s on the way.

Forecasters are calling for subfreezing temperatures beginning this evening with a cold air mass from Canada and the possibility of snow flurries. A second low-pressure system will carry an even colder dose of arctic air Saturday night, with overnight temperatures falling to the teens or low 20s in Portland-Vancouver.

“This is going to be the coldest we’ve seen so far this (season),” said Tiffani Brown, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland.

A storm chugging in from the Pacific Ocean will collide with the mass of frigid air by the middle of next week, potentially resulting in snow accumulating at the lowest elevations.

Forecasters said that the oncoming ocean-spawned moisture will eventually root out the cold air mass. But that will take time. Precipitation initially will fall as snow, forecasters said.

“We could see a little bit of snow before it turns to rain and melts it all away,” Brown said. “Obviously, the best-case scenario … is cold air kicks out before the rain arrives.”
