Christmas program at fort takes visitors back to 1840

Christmas in the 1840s will be the theme Saturday at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

The program will offer musical performances, craft displays and hands-on activities reflecting the holiday season at Fort Vancouver during the era of the Hudson’s Bay Company.

The holiday program will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the reproduction of the stockade at 1001 E. Fifth St., with more activities at other locations in Vancouver’s historic reserve.

Fort Vancouver events include:

  • 10 a.m., Christmas caroling by the Madrigal Singers.

  • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., cultural demonstrations: blacksmithing and Victorian handcrafts.

  • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., 1840s holiday hands-on activities: toymaking, potpourri, wreathmaking,

Victorian holiday crafts, holiday stories and readings, festive holiday beverages and holiday music.

  • 10:30 a.m. to noon, roving Christmas caroling by the Madrigal Singers and photo opportunity.

  • 1:30 p.m., historic weapons program: hunting on Christmas Day.

Entry fee to Fort Vancouver, which is a National Park Service site, is $5 for a family or $3 for an adult; children 15 and younger are free.

Visitor center and gift shop, 1501 E. Evergreen Blvd., 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 1840s children’s games, as well as cider and cookies. No admission fee.

Christmas at Pearson Air Museum, 1115 E. Fifth St., is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your camera and have your photo taken with Santa Claus in a vintage Ryan monoplane. Shoppers can buy aviation-related gifts. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for children. Call 360-694-7026.

Christmas at the Marshall House, 1301 Officers Row, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meet Don Lonsbrough, artist of the “Christmas at the Marshall House” ornament; Phillipe Litzler will perform holiday Celtic harp music from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; holiday shopping, children’s holiday stories and treats, and a chance to take family photos in front of a Victorian Christmas tree. Restaurant at the Historic Reserve, 1101 Officers Row, will have a “Breakfast With Santa” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reservations: 360-906-1101.

Water Resources Education Center, 4600 S.E. Columbia Way, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. A free afternoon of activities centered on recycled and repurposed materials for holiday gifts. Call 360-487-7111.
