Vancouver resident Anthony T. Bohanan made his first appearance in court today on suspicion of the armed robbery of Umpqua Bank in Hazel Dell on Thursday.
Police arrested Bohanan, 34, outside of a Vancouver apartment complex at about 8:15 a.m. Thursday, just an hour after the robbery occurred.
During his appearance in Clark County Superior Court Friday morning, Bohanan’s bail was set at $150,000 and Clark Fridley was appointed as his attorney. Bohanan is set to be arraigned on the first-degree robbery charge Dec. 18. Federal charges may also be filed, FBI spokeswoman and Special Agent Robbie Burroughs said.
Shot fired into floor
The robbery Bohanan is accused of committing occurred before the branch opened Thursday morning. A man with a gun came up behind an employee as she arrived to open the bank at 600 N.E. 99th St. When she tried to lock the door behind her, the man pushed his way into the bank and pointed the gun at her, Burroughs said.
The man demanded money. When the employee told him she didn’t have any money because the bank wasn’t open, he fired a round into the floor, Burroughs said. Nobody was hurt.
The employee gave the robber money and a tracking device which later led police to Thunderbird Village Apartments, 4601 E. 18th St., according to the probable cause affidavit filed by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
At the apartment complex, an officer saw Bohanan walking toward a trash can in the parking lot with a white garbage bag in his hand, according to court documents.
Bohanan was taken into custody without incident and allegedly admitted to robbing the bank and firing one shot from his pistol during the robbery, according to court documents.
Bohanan told police the gun and money were at his residence at 11006 N.W. 29th Ave., and his clothes were in the white bag he threw in the trash, according to court documents.
Bohanan is married and has children. He has worked as an order filler at Frito-Lay in Vancouver for nine years.
He has no criminal history in Clark County.
