Sunny day leads to snowy night

Don’t let today’s sunny skies fool you. Snow and freezing rain is on the way.

The ground should stay dry and the skies sunny throughout the day, but come nightfall, things will get messy.

During the day, temperatures shouldn’t get much higher than freezing and light wind from the east will sweep through the area. That wind will continue to blow into Vancouver through the weekend, colliding with warm precipitation to cause snow and freezing rain, said Rodger Nelson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Vancouver area from 8 tonight to 6 p.m. Saturday. Residents of the area should expect snow or freezing rain beginning at about 8 p.m., and snow after midnight, Nelson said. The valley floor may get dusted with a couple of inches of snow overnight. Higher elevation areas should expect about 4 inches, Nelson said.

A mix of snow and freezing rain will continue through Saturday, he said. Freezing rain could cause icy roads and dangerous driving conditions, Nelson said.

"People need to be extra cautious throughout the weekend driving anywhere through our area," he said. "… It doesn’t take much (freezing rain) to make things really terrible."

Anticipating snow, sleet and ice this weekend, the city of Vancouver began pretreating priority intersections and hills early this morning. Eight de-icing vehicles are also equipped and ready to roll.

By Monday, the Vancouver area should be experiencing normal weather for this time of year: rain and high temperatures of about 45 degrees, Nelson said.
