Heat tape applied to a drained pipe is being blamed for a fire that caused an estimated $15,000 damage Thursday.

The fire was reported at 7:57 a.m. at 207 N.W. Bassel Rd., just south of Salmon Creek and west of Klineline Pond. County records show the owner is Deborah Greenidge.

When firefighters from Clark County Fire District 6 and the Vancouver Fire Department arrived, they discovered a fire in the crawl space underneath the home, according to a news release.

A fire investigator has determined the source of the fire was heat tape applied to a pipe. The homeowners had drained the pipe Wednesday night because it was leaking but forgot to unplug the tape. It eventually overheated and caught fire.

Most of the fire damage was in the crawl space and to the home’s exterior, firefighters said.
