Fire damages Fourth Plain apartment complex
Laundry room fire triggered by wiring problem
Friday, December 18, 2009
An early morning fire caused an estimated $30,000 to a shared laundry room at the Bagley Downs Apartments, 4201 E. Fourth Plain Blvd.
The fire broke out shortly before 5 a.m. Friday. Apartment manager Layne Boucag was asleep in his apartment on the ground floor of Building A at the complex when he heard a smoke detector sound. He got up, noticed the smoke, and called the fire department, said Vancouver fire Capt. Bill Garlington.
Firefighters arrived at 5:03 a.m. and found a fire in the wall of the shared laundry room adjoining Boucag’s apartment, Garlington said. It was extinguished quickly, but Fourth Plain had to be closed for 40 minutes because the hydrant was across the street from the fire.
The two-story apartment building has nine units. None of the tenants was displaced by the fire, Garlington said.
A fire investigator determined the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring.
