Weather Eye: Christmas will have chill in air

Wednesday was cold, a damp cold that penetrated clear to the bone. I know it was very cold a few weeks ago, much, much colder. People remarked back then, “Oh this isn’t bad, it is a dry cold.” But the older I get, it is all relevant. If it is cold and damp or cold and dry it is just plain uncomfortable. I am a weather guy; if it is going to be cold, let’s see some snow and enjoy it. Otherwise, inside next to the fire looking out the window is my ideal.

Like someone said decades ago, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.” Guess it means something different to everyone. So, back to the chill, it will remain with us today and through the weekend as east winds begin their westward journey. That will add a bit of wind chill to the air in the east county. At least it will be dry, right? Better than gray skies and fog.

Ten years ago today my opening sentence in my column went like this, “Sunny skies prevailed Thursday as high pressure holds over the region and once again, it looks dry for several days.” With the anticipated sunshine breaking out today, we again have a similar weather pattern. Forecast charts do indicate some weak weather systems skirting the region over the weekend and early next week but I think things will remain on the dry side with minimal precipitation.

Weather observer Phil Delany, who lives above Dole Valley, reported 2 inches of snow early Tuesday from Monday’s weather system. Except for early morning frost, it will be a green Christmas for most of us. Merry Christmas to you and yours from the weatherman and bah humbug to El Nino!
