TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Law enforcement officers, firefighters and members of the public lined Interstate 5 overpasses as the body of slain Pierce County sheriff’s Deputy Kent Mundell left Seattle en route to a Pierce County funeral home.

The motorcade left the King County Medical Examiner’s office on Tuesday afternoon. Seattle police, state troopers and fellow Pierce County deputies escorted the medic unit carrying the casket. The 44-year-old Mundell died Monday evening at Harborview Medical Center after he was removed from life support.

Mundell and Sgt. Nick Hausner were shot Dec. 21 by David Crable when they responded to a domestic violence call at an Eatonville home. Investigators say despite being hit multiple times, Mundell shot back, killing Crable. Hausner is recovering from a gunshot wound to the neck.

A memorial for Mundell is planned Jan. 5 at the Tacoma Dome.
