King County: Green River levees at failure risk

SEATTLE (AP) — King County officials say about half a dozen levees along the Green River between Auburn and Tukwila are considered at failure risk. So even if the Howard Hanson Dam is operating normally, homes and businesses near the Green River are not completely safe from flood.

And if problems with the dam require operators to release enough water to reach the sandbags along the river, officials say chances of levee failure go up.

King County floodplain engineer Tom Bean says the water has not been that high in 50 years. And no one can say if that will ever happen.
