SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A dog that suffered extensive injuries while being snatched from a car near Spokane City Hall this past summer is recovering slowly. Her owner says Cocoa Butter has brain damage and nerve damage and the 5-year-old has given up chasing cats.

Cocoa Butter’s attack drew national attention after authorities released surveillance footage that showed her assailant kicking in the car window and attacking the dog. Her owners found Cocoa Butter limp on a downtown sidewalk.

21-year-old Michael J. Jones pleaded guilty to first-degree animal cruelty for the beating. He was released from jail after serving about four months and was ordered to help pay for Cocoa Butter’s medical expenses.

Donations from the community also made a difference in the dog’s recovery, enabling her to get all the treatment she needed including acupuncture.
