Disability Employment Awareness Awards

In recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, an awards ceremony honoring Clark County employers and employees was held Oct. 13 at the Hilton Vancouver Washington. The theme for the national event was “Expectation + Opportunity = Full Participation.” Award winners included:

Employer of the Year in the Public Sector Award: Clark Public Utilities.

Large Employer of the Year in the Private Sector Award: Walmart Supercenter.

Small Employer of the Year in the Private Sector Award: Smokey’s Pizza.

Employee of the Year Award: Eunice Williams, employed by Whole Foods.

Dennis Campbell Outstanding Service Award: Kris Krohn.

Washington State 4-H Hall of Fame

Two Clark County residents were inducted into the Washington State 4-H Hall of Fame in Grand Mound on Oct. 16. They were honored for their leadership, commitment to 4-H youth and volunteers, and positive impacts in their communities.

Veterinarian Jack Giesy, Vancouver, served as the Clark County Fair veterinarian for more than 40 years and a 4-H leader for more than 25 years. He has also served as a member of the Executive Horse Council, State 4-H Fair Board, 4-H Equine Advisory Committee, Clark County Fair Board, Silver Buckle Youth Equestrian Committee and, for the last 20 years, as a judge at the National 4-H Contest.

Clarence Petty, Vancouver, has served for more than 30 years as a 4-H leader in Clark County. Under his leadership, the Tailored-To-Ride 4-H Club put on the Silver Buckle Horse Show, which included educational clinics and the county’s largest tack sale. As an active member of the Clark County 4-H Horse Leader’s Council, Petty began the county reining program and engineered the fairgrounds horse barn paving project. Now serving as vice president of Area 4, his involvement includes Battle Ground Harvest Days, managing the horse show and working at spaghetti feeds. He also serves as president of the Northwest Harvest South, an organization responsible for collecting food for those in need.

Krista Foundation

Curt Farr, a graduate of Washington State University, was recognized by the Krista Foundation for Global Citizenship for his commitment to service and his constant involvement in his community. He received a $1,000 Service and Leadership grant and was included in the 2009 Krista Colleague Cohort program, an ecumenical Christian mentoring community. Farr is currently teaching English to 70 first- through seventh-graders and tutoring the clergy of the Episcopal Cathedral in Quito, Ecuador.

Washington State Bar Exam

Several local candidates passed the Washington State Bar Exam, which was administered in July in Bellevue. Clark County residents who passed included:

T.J. Fontenette, managing principal of Principal Properties, LLC, recently earned his master of business administration degree from the university’s Foster School of Business. In addition to earning his MBA, Fontenette holds the title of CCIM, Certified Commercial Investment Member.

Mary M. Verro graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts in sociology.

Pacific University

Travis J. Taylor, Vancouver, graduated with a doctorate in optometry.

Elias Gilman, Vancouver, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history.

Pacific Lutheran University

Andrew P. Lashua, Vancouver, earned bachelor of arts degrees in history and economics following the spring 2009 term. He was also named to the dean’s list for spring 2009. A 2005 graduate of Prairie High School, he is the son of David and Sarah Lashua of Vancouver.

Alexander S. Limoges, Vancouver, was named to the dean’s list for spring 2009. He is the son of Craig and Marcia Limoges of Vancouver and a graduate of Hudson’s Bay High School. He is pursuing a degree in nursing with minors in biology, religion and psychology.
