Wildcats knock off White Salmon to district’s No. 3 spot

The La Center girls soccer team rebounded from a tough loss on Tuesday to reach the Class 1A state tournament with a 3-0 win over Trico League rival White Salmon.

Jocelyn Burgess scored two goals and Hannah Hendrickson made six saves in goal to preserve the shutout.

“They all played really well after Tuesday’s loss,” coach Herm VanWeerdhuizen said, referring to La Center’s 6-1 loss to Montesano in the opening round of the district playoffs at Kalama. “It was just a different team out there.”

Burgess scored her first goal off an assist from Kristen Watkins for a 1-0 halftime lead.

Hannah Trigg made it 2-0 off an assist from Sydney Wise, and then Trigg scored again with an assist from Melanie Hodge.

“Our midfielders, Kirsten and Melanie, really controlled the play,” VanWeerdhuizen said. “Everyone really came out motivated.

La Center will be the No. 3 seed out of District 4.

Volleyball

2A district tournament — Hockinson won its opening match at Tumwater, sweeping Centralia in three games (25-20, 25-12, 25-12).

The Hawks will face Black Hills at 11 a.m. Saturday with the winner earning a berth to the 2A state tournament.

The loser moves into a 3 p.m. match.

Ridgefield lost its match to Tumwater 3-0 on Thursday. The Spudders must win twice on Saturday to reach state.
