The Semiconductor industry Association is predicting global semiconductor sales this year of $219.7 billion, an 11.6 percent decline from $248.6 billion in 2008, according to an SIA report released Thursday. The report also forecasts sales to grow by 10.2 percent to $242.1 billion in 2010 and by 8.4 percent to $262.3 billion in 2011.

The projections are slightly better than the industry previously anticipated, reflecting an improving global economy, said SIA President George Scalise in a statement.

Semiconductor sales have been gradually recovering over the past six months due to stronger-than-expected demand for PCs, LCD TVs, mobile phones and other devices. And local chip-related companies such as SEH America, Linear Technology Sharp and WaferTech have also benefitted from the sales improvements. Linear Technology, which operates a plant in Camas, reported a 14 percent increase in revenue in the quarter ending Sept. 30 from the previous quarter.
