Prep playoff pairings pose dilemma

Schedule announced Monday features busy Friday night

The Skyview and Union football teams will be battling again this week, this time fighting for football fans.

Sure, Skyview fans will be going to Kiggins Bowl and Union fans will flock to McKenzie Stadium. But football fans who do not have a Storm or a Titan in the fight will have to make a decision. The teams are playing at the same time Friday night in their respective state playoffs.

Skyview (8-2) will host Bethel (9-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Kiggins in the first round of the 16-team Class 4A state playoffs. Union (9-1) will host Capital (7-3) at 7:30 p.m. at McKenzie in the 3A playoffs.

Meanwhile, Columbia River (5-5) will get an extra day to prepare for its Class 3A first-round game. The Chieftains travel Saturday to Edmonds for a 6 p.m. kickoff against Meadowdale (10-0).

The Class 1A state playoffs also will have a game in Clark County. La Center (6-4) will be the home team in a 1 p.m. Saturday game at Battle Ground’s District Stadium. La Center will learn its opponent Tuesday night.

The brackets for every classification can be found online at wiaa.com. While you are there, go ahead and look ahead at some of the possible second-round match-ups. Coaches do not like to look ahead, but we can.

If Skyview wins, there is a possible game with Marysville-Pilchuck. Make that a possible rematch.

In Week 3, Skyview traveled 200 miles to take on the Tomahawks. M-P ended up with a 47-41 victory in a game that had more than 1,000 yards of offense and three running backs with at least 195 yards — two from Marysville-Pilchuck, one from Skyview.

The Storm would love another crack at the Tomahawks. After all, the Storm had all the momentum in the second half, closing a 21-point halftime deficit to six points. And this time, Skyview would be the home team.

In the 3A bracket, look who is on a collision course. That’s right, two GSHL squads. OK, it would surprise nobody if Union wins this week, and it would surprise just about every fan in the state if Columbia River wins. Still, the Chieftains won last week and they are still playing, which means they have a shot.

If Union and Columbia River both win this weekend, they will play each other in the quarterfinals. The winner of the Union-Capital game will be the home team for the quarters.

In the 1A bracket, if La Center wins Saturday, the Wildcats will be on the road for the quarterfinals.
