Columbia River beats Holy Names to move on

Olivia Lovell scored twice on assists from Eryn Brown as Camas made the most of its opportunities Tuesday for a 2-0 victory over Bonney Lake in the Class 3A girls soccer state playoffs.

With the win over the top seed from the South Puget Sound League in the game at Sumner High School, the Papermakers (14-3-1) advance to a home game in Saturday’s quarterfinals against Lakeside of Seattle, a 1-0 winner Tuesday over Union.

“Bonney Lake is a good team,” Camas coach Roland Minder said. “They’re the No. 1 out of the SPSL. There was a lot of fight in the game, talking figuratively. Both teams really wanted it badly. It was pretty much end-to-end.”

Camas scored once in each half on a connection between two forwards, with Lovell finding the back of the net in the 16th and 45th minutes of play. Brown, a senior, both times touched the ball in to the sophomore Lovell for the finish.

“On the first one, Eryn laid the ball in and Olivia made a central run toward the near post and the ball came right across the front of her,” Minder said. “She right-footed it in the right side of the keeper. On the second one, Olivia came off the left wing and Erin crossed the ball over to her and Olivia touched it in.

“Both goals came on just tucking away the shot.”

The run of play was essentially equal, Minder said, but both teams struggled to generate scoring chances. The Papermakers gave up several free kicks by fouling, the coach said, but were able to fend off the opportunities that gave their opponents.

Camas goalkeeper Andrea Soderberg had one save.

“Neither one of us gave each other much opportunity for shots on goal,” Minder said. “We were just able to finish the chances we got.”

A win on Saturday will send Camas to the Class 3A state semifinals, which will be played on Nov. 19 at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

Columbia River 2, Holy Names 0 — Marissa McKinnon broke a scoreless tie with her goal off an assist for Kellianne Swenson in the 60th minute, and the River defense did the rest.

“Holy Names was very, very physical team,” River coach Colleen McKinney said. “We had to do good job of moving the ball on the ground. The refs really weren’t calling much, so our girls had to battle to win it.”

Robin McGuire sealed the win over River in the 70th minute with her goal on an assist from Hannah Kimsey. Teagan Ryan had four saves in goal.

Columbia River will play Saturday against Meadowdale in Edmonds. It will set up a River-Meadowdale doubleheader, with the soccer team playing first, following by the 3A first-round football game.

“We should get a crowd for that,” McKinney said.

Class 2A playoffs

At Orting 7, La Center 0 — Acacia Johnson scored four goals for the Cardinals, as the Wildcats were eliminated in the first round of the state playoffs with the loss.

Dani Rae Edwards scored twice, and Chantelle Byagawan also tallied for Orting.

La Center coach Herm Van Weerdhuizen said his team has to learn from the experience, and use it to build for the future.

“We got as far as we could go, and that was it,” he said. “You can’t say anything. I tip my hat off to that (Orting) team. They’ll probably do well in state. We made it to state. Now we’ve just got to find a way to win at state. This is a tough league up here (the Nisqually League), and they played tough tonight.”
