Camas man famous for his tirade at Baird’s town hall meeting

David Hedrick of Camas, who attracted national attention last summer for his tirade against health care reform at Rep. Brian Baird’s Clark County town hall meeting, is in Florida stumping for a Republican congressional candidate today.

Although the former Marine has said he’s considering challenging Baird next year, he has not filed papers with the Federal Election Commission. Hedrick could not be reached for comment, but the campaign office of congressional candidate Patricia Sullivan in Mount Dora, Fla., near Orlando, confirmed his scheduled appearance.

Campaign spokesman Steve Pickering said Sullivan learned that Hedrick would be speaking at a Tea Party Express rally in Orlando on health care reform, tax reform and the need to limit the size of government. The event Thursday night was the capstone of a 20-day cross-country bus tour and series of rallies that began in San Diego on Oct. 25.

“We knew the list of people that were going and learned that he was there,” Pickering said. “We had seen his video.” Sullivan herself “managed to get hold of him and invite him to speak,” he said.

Sullivan is running to unseat Rep. Alan Grayson, a Democrat who is a staunch defender of the House health care reform bill passed Saturday. Grayson’s congressional Web site features a ticker counting down the number of Americans estimated to have died since Jan. 1 because they had no health insurance.

Sullivan’s blog features a video clip of Hedrick’s exchange with Baird at the Aug. 18 town hall.

“Mr. Hedrick’s strongly-worded advice to Congressman Baird was to step away from increasing the government’s role in his everyday life,” she writes on her blog. “As a result of his experience, Mr. Hedrick is now running for Congress, against Mr. Baird. Should be an interesting race!”

The video clip, taken from a columbian.com multimedia piece, received more than 1 million views on YouTube and drew national coverage for Hedrick, including interviews with Fox News.
