Water Resources Education Center activities appeal to senses of art fans, families

The Water Resources Education Center offers fun for art fans and families this weekend.

The latest exhibit at the center’s White Sturgeon Art Gallery debuted earlier this month and continues through the end of the year. Work by Grays Harbor College art professor Erik Sandgren is on display through Dec. 31 at the gallery. Sandgren’s work focuses on the waters of the Pacific Northwest.

The center is also hosting its monthly Second Saturday event, which features education and activities aimed at children and families. The November event celebrates National American Indian Heritage Month. Visitors will learn about how American Indians used the resources around them for play and daily living.

Hours: The Second Saturday event is from 1-3 p.m. today.

The center and gallery are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

1. Symphony features guest conductor

The Vancouver Symphony will perform a variety of works with guest conductor Richard Rintoul this weekend.

The symphony will perform “Symphony No. 3” in E-flat major by Ludwig van Beethoven, Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite” and Giuseppe Verdi’s overture to “Nabucco.”

When: 3 p.m. today and 7 p.m. Sunday.

Admission: $29-$42, $24 for seniors 62 and older, $9 for students with identification.

2. Wind symphony thinks globally

The Southwest Washington Wind Symphony will take fans on a musical trip this weekend.

The symphony will perform work by composers from around the world. Selections include Leonard Bernstein’s “Suite From Mass” with the Columbia River Brass Quintet, Gabriel Fauré’s “Cantique de Jean Racine” with harpist Kate Petak, “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed and Leroy Anderson’s “Rakes of Mallow.”

When: 3-4:15 p.m. Sunday.

3. Christian Youth Theater goes back to ‘School’

Fans can follow the exploits of Troy, Gabriella and the rest of the East High School Wildcats in Christian Youth Theater’s latest production, “High School Musical 2.”

In the production, the group finishes its junior year and gets ready for a busy summer. In the story, friendships are tested and the meaning of success is redefined.

“High School Musical 2” includes a variety of songs and dance numbers.

When: 7 tonight, Friday and Nov. 21; 3 p.m. today and Nov. 21; 2 p.m. Sunday and Nov. 22; and 6 p.m. Sunday.

4. Disaster looms in ‘2012’

The latest disaster film from director Roland Emmerich, “2012,” explores the idea of the world ending in 2012, coinciding with the end of the current cycle of the Mayan Long Count Calendar. Emmerich follows a divorced father (John Cusack) who tries to save his family as the natural disasters begin piling up. He meets a blogger and radio host who tells him about the theory.
