Sophomore Halley Kreminski scored both goals, including the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, to lead the No. 2 Portland Pilots to a 2-1 victory over the Washington Huskies in an NCAA second round women’s soccer match Sunday at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex.

Portland (20-1-0) advances to the third round for the 10th consecutive season and will host third-seeded Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. Friday. The Hokies were 3-1 winners over Dayton on Sunday.

Lindsey Kasser scored Washington’s goal to tie the match in the 56th minute. The Huskies finish the season 12-6-4.

Tickets for the Pilots’ third-round NCAA match will go on sale at 11 a.m. Wednesday through all Ticketmaster outlets or in person at the Pilot Box Office.

In other NCAA matches:

n Jasmyne Spencer’s first half goal lifted Maryland past Washington State 1-0 at College Park, Md. The goal came in the 33rd minute off a rebound of a shot after No. 19 Maryland (14-5-2) had earned a corner kick.

Washington State (14-6-2), ranked 14th nationally, outshot the Terrapins 12-10 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

n Melinda Ingalls’ golden goal in the 99th minute made Oregon State women’s soccer history as the Beavers defeated Florida, 1-0 at Columbus, Ohio, to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history. The Beavers became the second unseeded team (joining Virginia) to advance to the regional semifinals.

Oregon State (14-7-1) will play at Notre Dame in the regional semifinals on Friday.

Belbin-Agosto top ice dance

Kim Yu-na was not infallible.

She still was a winner at Skate America.

Not stumbling at all were Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto, who swept all three portions of ice dance at Lake Placid, N.Y.

Feeling nervous and “heavy,” Kim, the world champion from South Korea, won her second consecutive Skate America title despite losing the free skate Sunday to American Rachael Flatt.

Kim made two major mistakes, including a fall on the triple flip — the one element on which she has struggled at times. That left enough of an opening for Flatt, the U.S. runner-up last January, to take the free program 116.11 points to 111.70.

But Kim had such a large lead after her surpassing short program that she took the gold medal by more than 13 points.

Belbin and Agosto skated to “Ave Maria” and “Amen” and admitted it was not their very best. But the 2006 Olympic silver medalists and current world runners-up staged a fast, energetic free skate that earned them 95.62 points Sunday. Their overall score of 195.85 was best by nearly 24 points over Italy’s Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte.

Chilliwack edges Winterhawks

Ryan Howse and Roman Horak both had a pair of goals to lead the Chilliwack Bruins over the Portland Winterhawks 5-4 in Western Hockey League play on Sunday night at the Rose Garden.

Howse scored both of his goals on the power play and added an assist, while Horak added a man-advantage goal for the Bruins (9-12-4). Shayne Weigum added a single, while Jesse Craige and Chris Collins both had a pair of assists.

Portland (15-8-0) had goals from Taylor Jordan, Nini Neiderreiter, Spencer Bennett and Chris Francis, who scored shorthanded.

Bruins goalie Mark Friesen made 24 saves, while Kurtis Mucha stopped 40 shots for Portland.

Phelps misses out on records

Racing in an old-style swimsuit and with little practice, Michael Phelps did no join the swimmers in high-tech suits who went on a world record binge at two short-course World Cup meets this week.

Phelps had to settle for second place in the 200-meter individual final on Sunday behind Darian Townsend of South Africa, who broke one of the 16 world records set in two days of competition in Berlin.

Those records followed the nine that were set in Stockholm earlier this week as swimmers continue to rewrite the record books before the high-performance suits are banned on Jan. 1.

More records are likely to be broken at the upcoming World Cup meet in Singapore, the European short-course championships and an All-Star meet in December.

Phelps ended his weeklong European tour with no wins in two meets, let alone any records. Still, the American was not complaining — at least not that much.

“I prefer not to lose, but I knew coming in that it would be very, very hard to win anything,” Phelps said.

Djokovic stands tall in Paris

Third-seeded Novak Djokovic scrambled to a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3) victory over local favorite Gael Monfils on Sunday to win the Paris Masters for the first time.

The victory gave Djokovic back-to-back ATP Tour titles after his win over top-ranked Roger Federer in the Swiss Indoors final last Sunday.

The third-ranked Djokovic also beat World No. 2 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals in Paris and will be a strong favorite when he’ll try to defend his title at the eight-man ATP World Tour Finals from Nov. 22-29 in London.

SPEEDSKATING: Ohno claims 1,000 at short track WC

Apolo Anton Ohno won the 1,000 meters at the short track speedskating World Cup on Sunday at Marquette, Mich., beating South Korea’s Lee Jung-su in the final.

American Katherine Reutter finished second in the women’s 1,000 behind Meng Wang of China. Park Seung-hi of South Korea was third.

n Shani Davis won the 1,000-meter World Cup speedskating race on Sunday in the Netherlands for his second individual victory of the weekend. Davis finished in 1 minute, 8.48 seconds to edge Simon Kuipers of Netherlands. Davis won the 1,500 on Friday and was also on the U.S. team that tied for first with the Netherlands in the men’s pursuit.

Herbst wins men’s slalom

Reinfried Herbst of Austria won the men’s World Cup slalom opener on Sunday at Levi, Finland, and American Bode Miller was disqualified in his first race of the season.

Herbst posted a two-run time of 1 minute, 49.79 seconds down the Black Course to beat runner-up Ivica Kostelic of Croatia by 0.28 seconds. It was Herbst’s sixth career World Cup victory, all in slalom.

Miller barely qualified for the second run, finishing 30th in the opener to take the last slot. The former two-time overall champion got hit in the face by a gate early in the second run and did not finish.
