Local Pop Warner teams bound for California regionals

Regional playoffs begin road to Super Bowl

Six Pop Warner football teams from Southwest Washington will travel to California this week to participate in regional playoff games.

Three of the teams going to the regionals are in Division II and eligible to advance as far as the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Orlando, Fla., the week of Dec. 7. They are the North County Wildcats in the Junior Pee Wee Division and East County Jets teams in the Pee Wee and the Junior Midget divisions.

Also going to California for regional play are Division III teams from the Evergreen Bulldogs (Junior Pee Wee and Pee Wee) and the North County Wildcats (Junior Midget).

Pop Warner football divides its leagues by ages and weights. The Junior Pee Wee Division is for ages 8-11, weighing 60-105 pounds. The Pee Wee Division is open to ages 9-12 weighing 70-120 pounds. The Junior Midget Division is for ages 10-13 weighing 85-135 pounds.

Five teams from Southwest Washington will travel to the regional Pop Warner Cheerleading Championships on Nov. 27 in Santa Clara, Calif.

CCYF crowns champs

Clark County Youth Football capped its 27th season on Saturday with five championship games at Washougal High School.

Below are the results.

Grades 2-3: Woodland Beavers 38, West Vancouver Sharks 12.

Grades 4-5: Camas 19, Battle Ground Saints 7.

Grade 6: East Vancouver Titans 7, West Vancouver Chieftains 6.

Grade 7: West Vancouver Lions 14, Woodland Beavers 7.

Grade 8: Woodland Giants 20, East Vancouver Thunder 12.

Triathlete shines in Florida

Joshua Monda of Vancouver was the top American amateur at the 2009 Ironman World Championship 70.3 on Friday in Clearwater, Fla.

More than 1,800 athletes from around the world qualified to participate in the event, which is half the distance of a full Ironman triathlon.

Monda finished in 4 hours, 7 minutes and 22 seconds, improving his personal record for the half-Ironman distance by about 15 minutes.

He completed the 1.2-mile swim in 30:12, finished the 56-mile bike ride in 2:10:45, and finished the 13.1-mile run in 1:21:52. His half-marathon time was 37th overall.

Monda, 27, was seventh in his age division overall, and 36th among all amateur participants.

Youth cross country

Holly Meler led a strong showing by local runners on Saturday at United States Track and Field Junior Olympics cross country state meets.

Running for the Flanagan Clan Girls Track Club of Woodland, Meler won the race for girls ages 17-18 at the Pacific Northwest Association meet at Woodland Park in Seattle. She completed the 5,000-meter race in 20 minutes and 4 seconds.

The top 35 runners in each age division at Saturday’s meets qualified for the regional Junior Olympics races on Nov. 21 in Spokane. Meler, along with Clan runners Nicole Tompkins and Hannah Arn in the 11-12 age group — plans to attend the regionals.

Other top performances from Flanagan Clan runners in Seattle were a fifth-place finish among girls 15-16 for Lindsay Tompkins (21:09), and an eighth-place for Nicole Tompkins in the 11-12 age group 3,000-meter race (12:42).

Three members of the McKinney family, running for the Evergreen Storm, placed at the Oregon state meet in Sandy.

Kaitlyn McKinney took third place among girls 13-14, completing 5,000 meters in 20:56.7. Will McKinney took fourth place among boys ages 9-10, completing 3,000 meters in 12:23.9. Cassie McKinney ran 12:35 for the 3,000 to place ninth among girls 11-12.

The McKinneys do not plan to compete at the regionals in Spokane, according to Storm coach Scott Slamp.

Youth-adult bowling

Donald Shaffer II and Donnie Allen III finished No. 1 in the 21st Clark County Bowling Adult-Youth Doubles Championships, which concluded on Sunday at Bailey’s Classic Lanes.

Shaffer and Allen rolled a six-game total of 1,432 — with no handicap added — to win by four pins over Tyler Porter and Stoney Brown in the division for bowlers whose youth bowler’s game average is 175 and higher.

Winners of the other divisions were Robert Melton and Bobby Melton (150-174 average), Katryn Comeau and Paul Comeau (125-149), Wylicia Faley and Frank Brosh (100-124), Hunter Bower and Kathryn White (76-99), and Jordan Head and Sean Head (75 and under).

Entries are also open for the 38th Clark County Mixed Championship Bowling Tournament, which will take place over three weekends beginning on Saturday and Sunday at Bailey’s Classic Lanes. Call 360-694-6348 for details or to register.
